We’re ideally situated for walkers, cyclists, garden and steam enthusiasts, together with budding astronomers so read further to find out more about Exmoor activities.

There’s 750+ miles of paths and 267sq. miles of stunning countryside to explore by foot, horse or bike and historic properties and gardens to visit. Exmoor is a designated Dark Sky Reserve and the perfect place for stargazing.

There’s nothing better than a brisk, or leisurely, walk on Exmoor, which has 750+ miles of public access pathways. Here you can experience wild moorland with lush, deep, river-made, wooded valleys, dotted with pretty, thatched cottages, and acres of woodland.  Click here for just a small selection of walks available.

Garden visits

Dunster Castle has an interesting Mediterranean garden and Hestercombe Gardens is ideal if you’re interested in garden design. Hestercombe’s owners, before it became a trust, commissioned Sir Edwin Lutyens to create a formal garden with a planting scheme by Gertrude Jekyll.

Deer safaris

We can arrange breaks to include a deer safari across the moor and the chance to see these magnificent animals and other wildlife in their natural glory.  Exmoor is beautiful whatever the season, but the red deer are particularly majestic in autumn.

Explore moorland and seascapes by road bike or mountain bike and enjoy the very best home comforts here with us on Exmoor. We have a free drying room for outdoor clothing, bike washing facilities and secure cycle storage.

Extreme sports

Exmoor offers the perfect terrain for extreme sports. Try coasteering or rock climbing with Exmoor Adventures or adrenaline-fueled events like the South West Coast Path long distance run, a cross country run up Dunkery Beacon and The Beauty & The Beast cycle event.

Horse riding

There are more than 300 miles of bridleways available to riders of all abilities on Exmoor and it’s one of the most accessible areas to explore on horseback. Burrowhayes Riding Stables is just 10 minutes away from us too.

Exmoor National Park has been recognised as an International Dark Sky Reserve which makes it an ideal location for stargazing.  Here at the Hotel, John is happy to help guests explore the sky using the hotel’s own 6″ Newtonian telescope.
