You may have missed National Picnic Week back in June, but we never need an excuse to picnic here in Somerset and especially up on Exmoor or the Quantocks, so here is a guide to some of our favourite picnicking spots in the area. And if you stay with us and you need us to make you up a picnic to take, let us know!
After a short drive through Great Wood, you will arrive at Ramscombe (OS Grid ref: ST182378). There is plenty of space for a picnic or a barbeque and you can build up an appetite by going for a walk on one of the many trails.
There are many perfect picnic spots here on the banks of the River Barle (OS Grid ref: SS 816 361). There are Exmoor ponies to be seed here and if you wish to picnic away from the river there are plenty of small laybys and tracks to be used.
Bossington (Grid Ref: SS 8987 4776) village is a charming collection of quaint cottages. The car park has a cute picnic space with tables and a BBQ area. There are also toilets here and it’s just a short walk to the Porlock shingle ridge and marsh, or there are lots of walks from the car park including the South West Coast Path.
Malmsmead (OS Grid ref: SS 791 477) features a traditional Exmoor ford with a pack horse bridge alongside it. The car park here has an honesty box and picnic areas. There is also a path that follows the river through the Doone Valley offering numerous opportunities for picnis by the river.
